Six Bobcats qualify for state finals
The Saddleback track & field team had six members qualify for the 3C2A State Finals at the Southern California Regional Finals on Saturday at Saddleback. Three women and three men will make the trip north after a big weekend at the regional finals.
Saddleback had a big finish a year ago when it won two individual state titles at the state championships. The Bobcats should have a decent shot at a few more in 2025 after performing well at the regional finals.
On the women's side, Emily Fuhrmann, Danna Ibarra Canales and Maya Schweitzer all qualified for the state finals next weekend in San Mateo.
Fuhrmann finished third in the triple jump when she had a jump of 10.83 meters on her fourth attempt. It was Furhmann's personal-best in the event and the eight best score in the state this season.
In addition to Fuhrmann, Schweitzer finished an eyelash behind in fifth place with a jump of 10.77 meters. It was a personal-best for Schweitzer and moved her into 12th in the state.
Danna Ibarra Canales qualified in two events, finishing fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:55.54) and third in the 5,000 meters (19:34.36). Ibarra Canales was the state champion at the 2024 state finals when she ran a 4:39.39 to capture the top spot on the podium.
The Saddleback men had three qualify in Griffin Schwab, Micah Krosby and Shae Tina.
Schwab has become one of the favorites to capture a state title in the high jump over the past month and finished second on Saturday at the regional finals. Schwab cleared 1.95 meters on his first attempt in finishing behind Riverside's Bryson Williamson, who owns the top jump in the state this season. Schwab is currently tied for second in the state after clearing 2.00 meters at the Cerritos Invitational a month ago.
Joining Schwab in making the state finals were Krosby and Tina. Krosby finished fourth in the pole vault. He cleared 4.55 meters which tied for the second-best vault of the day, but was declared the fourth-place finisher due to misses earlier in the day. Krosby is the defending state champion in the pole vault and had a career-best vault in the prelims last Saturday when he cleared 4.75 meters, which was fourth best in the state this season.
Tina made the state meet by having a career day in the hammer throw. Tina's toss of 47.10 meters on his second throw of the day moved him all the way up to 11th in the state this season and sixth at the regional finals.
The 3C2A State Meet is held at the College of San Mateo this coming Friday and Saturday.
