Cats win five events
The Saddleback track & field team seems to be getting better every meet and had a tremendous showing at the Moorpark Invitational this past weekend in Moorpark. The Bobcats win five events while finishing in the top five on 14 occasions.
Saddleback set a number of personal bests and had a new record set when Danna Ibarra Canales set the new school record in the women's 5,000 meters. Ibarra Canales crossed the finish line in 17:24.84, which broke her own school record by nearly eight seconds. The defending state champion in the 1,500 meters also won the 1,500 in a time of 4:44.87. Her time in the 5,000 meters currently ranked third in the state while her best time in the 1,500 meters ranks first.
Joining Ibarra Canales with top five finishes on the women's side was Maya Schweitzer, Brenna McKinnon and Kiana Zerehgar. Schweitzer finished second in the triple jump (10.49m) while finishing fourth in the long jump (4.78m). McKinnon set a personal-best in the 400 meters (1:01.00) while finishing fourth. Zerehgar was fourth in the 5,000 meters (19:10.28).
Saddleback's other state champion from a season ago is Micah Krosby, who won the pole vault title last May. Krosby set a new personal-best in the pole vault when he cleared 4.60 meters to finish first. He currently has the sixth best vault in the state this season.
Joining Krosby in the winner's circle was Griffin Schwab, who won two separate events. Schwab had a personal-best in both the high jump and 110 hurdles in finishing first in both events. He cleared 2.0 meters in the high jump, which tied him for the second-best leap in the state this season. He ran 15.63 in the 110 hurdles, which was the 20th best time in the state this season.
In addition, Saddleback had four others with top five finishes in Austin Long, Rylan Edrosolano, Shae Tina and Ayson Anderson.
Long finished second in the 400-meter hurdles when he set a personal-best with a time of 58.51. He also finished third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.31. Edrosolano was fourth in the high jump (1.75m) while Anderson was fifth in the pole vault (3.82m). Tina was fourth in the hammer throw (43.22) when he recorded a personal-best and the 17th best throw in the state this season.
