Soccer still undefeated through four

The Saddleback women's soccer team ran its record to 4-0 on Tuesday with a 4-1 win at San Diego City College.  It is the third straight season the Gauchos have started 4-0 as they head into Orange Empire Conference play next week.

Saddleback saw one streak come to an end on Tuesday when San Diego scored in the 55th minute, ending a 322-minute streak without surrendering a goal.  It set up an interesting final 25 minutes as the Gauchos trailed for the first time all season.

Saddleback dominated play in the first half but could not find the back of the net.  The Gauchos outshot the Knights 17-0, but were unable to break the scoreless tie.

Following the San Diego goal, Saddleback caught fire on a 100-degree day.  The Gauchos scored four goals in a span 13 minutes, starting with a penalty kick in the 71st minute.  After Emilee Monnig was dragged down in the box, Danielle Scelsi connected on a free kick and the game was tied at 1-1.

Breanna Taboada followed with a goal in the 75th minute off a pass from Helene Hollidge, giving the Gauchos their first lead of the game.  Monnig scored five minutes later off a pass from Liana Larkins for a 3-1 lead before Sabrina Garrido finished the scoring in the 83rd minute off a pass from Taboada.

Saddleback outshot San Diego 30-1, dominating all aspects of the game.

"It was a great test of their character after falling behind on the road," head coach BJ McNicol said.

Saddleback will open Orange Empire Conference play on Tuesday when it hosts Orange Coast College in the home-opener.  The kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
