Softball rallies past Fullerton

The Saddleback softball team won its second straight game on Wednesday with a 5-3 decision over Fullerton College at Trani Field.  The Gauchos rallied for five runs to improve to 2-1 in Orange Empire Conference play.

Saddleback trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning when they finally kicked things into gear.  The Gauchos tallied three runs in the inning and scored two more in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.

Fullerton helped the cause in the fifth by committing three errors, allowing the Gauchos to score three unearned runs.  Libby Riehl put Saddleback ahead 2-1 on a single to right field, allowing Hope Manuszak to score the go-ahead run.  Later in the inning Nicole Gliko was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Gauchos a 3-1 lead.

Saddleback tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth, with Samantha Molina providing the big blow with a solo home run to left field to up the lead to 5-1.

Nelsa Barilea was calm on the mound, giving up just one earned-run over seven innings of work.  Barilea struck out four in improving to 6-5 on the season.

Saddleback is now 2-1 in conference play, moving into third place in the conference standings.  The Gauchos will look for a third straight win on Friday when they travel to Orange Coast College to take on the Pirates.  The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
