A homecoming to remember

The Saddleback football team won its fourth straight game with a 48-10 win against Palomar College on Saturday night inside the stadium.  The win on Homecoming has them at 3-0 in league play.

Saddleback seems to be hitting its stride at the right time.  The Bobcats were impressive in all three phases of the game, rolling up 418 yards of offense while forcing three turnovers and excelling in the special teams.

Saddleback scored on the first play from scrimmage when Palomar running back Omarion Ireland fumbled and Bryce Crider scooped up the ball and ran it 22 yards for a score.  Palomar scored its only two points of the half two minutes later when Saddleback running back Paolo Burak was tackled in the end zone when the Bobcats were up against their own goal line.

From that point forward, Saddleback dominated every phase of the game.  The Bobcats pulled out some trickery later in the quarter when Branden Berwald threw a lateral to Jacob Sears in the flat, who found Seth Lyon (pictured) wide open for a 52-yard touchdown.  The Bobcats made it 21-2 with 13:14 left in the half when Berwald scampered around the left end for a four-yard score.

Saddleback added a pair of short field goals in the third quarter from Kian Afrookhteh to extend the lead to 27-2 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Bobcats would then take advantage of two muffed punts and a blocked punt by the Palomar special teams, turning them into late touchdown runs from Ezekiel Peirce, Josiah Niblett and Chase Christner

It all added up to lopsided score on the scoreboard and a fourth straight win on the schedule.  The Bobcats held a 418-305 advantage in total yardage for the night.  Tristan McMurry, Sterling Decosta and Enrique Amposta all finished with five total tackles to tie for the team lead while Michael D'Amato, Jackson Irwin and Brennen Acosta all recorded sacks.

Saddleback will try to extend the winning streak next Saturday when they travel to Grossmont College to take on the Griffins.  The kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
