Bobcats break out at Southwestern

The Saddleback football team broke out of a slump with a 47-13 win at Southwestern College on Saturday night in Chula Vista.  The 47 points was the highest scoring game of the season so far for the Bobcats.

Saddleback entered having lost six straight games, many of which were winnable but managed to slip away.  This week the Bobcats scored a resounding win at Southwestern and healed a lot of wounds in the process.

Saddleback trailed 6-3 in the opening quarter before ripping off 37 straight points to put away the Jaguars. The Bobcats rolled up 561 yards of offense, led by quarterback Branden Berwald.  The freshman quarterback threw for 176 yards and one score and led Saddleback on the ground with 121 yards rushing and another score.  Jamari Ferrell was also a big factor on the ground, rushing for 85 yards and two touchdowns as the Bobcats rushed for 322 yards on the night.

Saddleback's defense was dominant throughout, allowing -29 yards rushing for the day.  The Bobcats recorded five sacks, with Kanious Vaughn recording three and Chad Nuschy two.  Saddleback recorded 11 quarterback hurries, making things uncomfortable for a trio of Southwestern quarterbacks that played in the game.

Saddleback is now 2-6 overall and 1-2 in Southern League play following the win.  The Bobcats will host Fullerton College next Saturday in the final home game of the season.  The Bobcats and Hornets are set to kick off at 6:00 PM inside the stadium.

The 47 points on Saturday night was the most for the program since scoring 49 against Southwestern in week eight of the 2021 season.    Saddleback is now 24-3-1 lifetime against the Jaguars.
