Gauchos go medieval on Knights

The Saddleback baseball team is off to a hot start to the season and ran its record to 3-0 on Saturday with an 8-0 win over San Diego City College.  The Gaucho pitching staff stifled the Knights' offense, holding them to six hits on the day.

Saddleback has been scoring runs in bunches this season and Saturday was no exception.  Leading 2-0 in the seventh inning the Gauchos struck for four runs, opening up a close game and putting the game out of reach for San Diego City.

Saddleback took an early lead in the opening inning when Colby Schultz tripled to start the inning and Dylan Diaz brought him in on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.  The game would remain tight when Casey Worden belted a solo home run in the fifth inning for a 2-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, pitcher Stephen Young was brilliant in his first college start.  The freshman from Mission Viejo pitched 5.1 innings, spreading around five hits while striking out three in leaving with a 2-0 lead for his first win of the year.  He gave way to Jackson Rees, who allowed just one base-runner the rest of the way.

Worden and Dan James (pictured) would lead the way offensively with two hits apiece while Shultz would reach base three times.

Saddleback is now 3-0 for the first time since starting 6-0 in 2013.  The Gauchos will try to make it four in a row when they travel to Chaffey College on Tuesday.  The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
