Gauchos bury Vaqueros in the sand

The Saddleback women's beach volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a 5-0 victory over Glendale College on Wednesday afternoon at the Great Park in Irvine.  The Gauchos lost just one game all day in winning their home-opener.

Saddleback was coming off a couple of frustrating losses on opening day last week and wanted to bounce back with a solid performance.  They achieved their goal, winning on courts one through four while picking up a forfeit on court five.

Saddleback's No. 1 duo of Ayla Fresenius and Nickie Hughes (pictured) sent an early message with a 21-7, 21-6 win over Jennifer Frasco  and Nicole Oberhammer to give the Gauchos the early 2-0 lead after the forfeit on court five.  Not far behind was the combination of Samantha Dougher and Serenity Broome on court four, picking up a 21-7, 21-9 win over Seda Kazaryan and Sona Abramova for a 3-0 lead and a team victory.  Shortly thereafter, Saddleback made it 4-0 when Jillian Hewitt and Ireland Ridill recorded a 21-10, 21-7 over Claire Codding and Romina Torokian on court three.  The Gauchos then completed the sweep on court two when Kiana Camargo and Samantha Senske had to go three sets to defeat Ruth Guziec and Vanessa Vargas 21-11, 20-22, 15-7.

Saddleback now stands at 1-2 on the season heading into a double-header at the OC Great Park on Friday.  The Gauchos will open with Orange Empire Conference foe Golden West College at 11:00 AM followed by a non-conference matchup with Palomar College at 1:00 PM.
