The Saddleback women's soccer team played Santiago Canyon College to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday inside the stadium. All four goals were scored on penalty kicks.
Saddleback and Santiago Canyon was easily the top game in the state on Tuesday as Saddleback came into the game No. 1 in Southern California in power points and Santiago Canyon was No. 2. The game played out even as well as neither team was able to separate itself from the other.
All four goals in the game were scored on penalty kicks after players were fouled in the box. Saddleback opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Jinan Said was tripped inside the box. Araylia Holiday ended up taking the penalty kick and giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead on her fifth goal of the season.
Santiago Canyon then had two penalty kicks in the final six minutes of the opening half. Ayleen Jimenez and Faith Ammann both made good on their attempts and Santiago Canyon led 2-1 at the intermission.
Saddleback wasted no time getting even as they had a player fouled inside the box on the first trip down the field and were awarded a penalty kick. Cheyenne Embrey (pictured) was given the opportunity to take the kick and beat the keeper to the right side of the net to even the score. It was Embrey's first goal of the season and came at a great time.
The rest of the game was very physical and neither team had a great opportunity to score. The two squads combined for 28 total fouls in the game, many of which came in the final 45 minutes. Saddleback finished with an 8-7 advantage in total shots for the game.
Saddleback is now 10-1-2 overall and 5-0-2 in Orange Empire Conference play. The Bobcats will start the second round of OEC play on Friday when they travel to Golden West College for a 3:00 PM game against the Rustlers.
