Gauchos tied for second after day one
The Saddleback women's golf team opened the Southern California Regional Championships with a round of 329 at Alisal River Golf Course on Sunday. The Gauchos are tied for second place heading into the final round on Monday.
Saddleback had its best round in six weeks on the 5,710-yard layout in Solvang. The Gauchos had two low rounds of the year with Brittney Do shooting even par 72 and Tomoko Kim 84.
Do finished the Orange Empire Conference schedule with a 77.1 stroke average and may be hitting her stride at the right time. Her low round of the season coming into Sunday was 75 at El Prado Golf Club over a month ago, but she put it all together on Sunday in the opening round of the SoCal Finals. Do started at the 15th hole and shot 36 on each nine, rallying with an eagle on the 11th hole. She is tied for second place in medalist play with Haruka Koda of College of the Canyons, three shots back of Canyons' Jesse Lin.
Kim had her best round of the season on Sunday, shooting 84 (+12). She bettered her season of low of 86 at the Orange Empire Conference Championships on October 24, giving the Gauchos a boost out of the No. 4 position. Tannaz Khazeni shot 86 and Anna Stowers 87 to round out the team scoresheet.
Saddleback is tied with College of the Desert for second place, 31 shots back of College of the Canyons. The Gauchos are five shots ahead of fourth place Santa Barbara City College and 26 shots ahead of fifth place Mt. San Antonio College, with the top four teams advancing to the CCCAA State Championships in Morro Bay on November 11-12.
