Cats stun ASU to go 3-0
The Saddleback women's flag football team won three straight games at the California Lutheran University Tournament on Friday to head to Saturday's single elimination round as the top seed from their bracket. The Bobcats stunned Arizona State in game two by turning the tables on the Sun Devils.
Saddleback's women's flag football program may be in its first year of existence, but it certainly isn't playing like it. The Bobcats are now 5-1 heading into play on Saturday and have had some benchmark wins along the way.
Saddleback opened the tournament with a 25-0 shutout of National University on Friday. The Bobcats led 25-0 at halftime before taking the foot off the gas pedal and saving energy for a big matchup against Arizona State. Kirra Clavijo and Leilani De Leon both threw two touchdown scores in the win.
Saddleback then took on Arizona State and went right down the field on the opening drive to take a 7-0 lead when Clavijo found Anelly Alba for a score and 7-0 lead. The Sun Devils came storming back and took the lead on the final play of the first half when they scored to grab a 14-7 break at the intermission.
Saddleback took control of the game in the second half as the defense came to play. The Bobcats held ASU scoreless while grabbing back the lead. Saddleback got to within 14-13 when Clavijo connected with Olivia Green for a short touchdown as the Bobcats drove 60 yards for the score. Saddleback then scored the go-ahead touchdown when Clavijo found Isabelle Whittaker in the back of the end zone for a 19-14 lead with 1:50 remaining on the clock. Saddleback then needed a defensive stand to hang on to the lead and made the biggest play of the game when Alba intercepted a deflected pass to seal the game with 1:13 remaining.
Saddleback took on a tired California Lutheran team in game three as Cal Lu had to play six games on the day due to one of the teams not making the trip for the tournament. The Bobcats had two touchdown passes from Clavijo and two from De Leon while Addie Lee had a pick six on defense as Saddleback won 32-0.
