Medley sets new record, close on another

The Saddleback women's track & field team was in action on Wednesday and Thursday at the California State University Los Angeles Twilight Meet and had a handful of stellar performance.  Maliyah Medley was the headliner, setting a new program record in the 400 meters and turning in the second best time ever in the 200 meters.

Medley was lightning fast in the 400 meters, shattering a record she had set earlier in the season.  Her time of 55.31 on Thursday was 0.79 seconds quicker than her record of 56.10 at the Occidental College Invitational in March, which had eclipsed a school record set back in 1997 by Kelly Phillips (56.51).

Later in the day Medley came close to a second record when she finished second in the 200 meters in a time of 24.56.  It was the third best time in the state this season and trails only Sara Morton (23.85) in program history.

Saddleback had other solid performances at CSULA.  Jolie Robinson tied her career mark in the long jump when she finished second at the meet with a leap of 5.77 meters.  The only performer to beat her was Natasha Bennett from Lewis University in Illinois.  Robinson's mark of 5.77 meters remains the longest jump in the state this season and the third longest in Saddleback program history.  She followed it up with a second place finish in the triple jump on Thursday.

Saddleback also had a solid performance in the 4 x 100 relay when the quartet of Morgan Cowell, Maliyah Medley, Jolie Robinson and Chelsea Kerr finished fourth with a time of 49.49.  It was the fifth fastest time in program history and 10th fastest time in the state this season.

Saddleback women's track & field will be back in action at the Orange Empire Conference prelims next Friday at Golden West College.
