Another record drops

The Saddleback women's track & field team has had a big week.  For the second time in less than 48 hours a program record has been set after Maliyah Medley shattered the record in the 400 meters on Saturday at Occidental College.

Medley played soccer at Saddleback in 2019 and 2021 and was the Most Valuable Player of the Orange Empire Conference this past fall.  Now she has her sights set on track, and has wasted no time in leaving a mark.

In just her second appearance of the season, Medley went out and broke the school record in the 400 meters on Saturday at the Occidental Distance Carnival Meet in Los Angeles.  Medley defeated all of the other 48 competitors, crossing the finish line in 56.10 to win by more than a second.  It was better than two seconds quicker than her time at the Soka Invitational three weeks earlier and 0.41 seconds quicker than the previous school record set by Kelly Phillips in 1997 (56.51).

Medley's record came on the heels of teammate Jolie Robinson setting a record on Thursday in the heptathlon.  Robinson followed up her win at the Orange Empire Conference heptathlon with a second place finish in the long jump at the Occidental Distance Carnival on Saturday.

Another on the cusp of a record is pole vaulter Isabelle Teh, who cleared 3.43 meters on Saturday at Occidental.  The school record in the pole vault is 3.56 meters set by Alissa Miller in 2005.  Teh's vault of 3.43 on Saturday was the fourth best performance in program history and the best since Kelly Gibson cleared 3.55 meters in 2012.

Saddleback track & field will be back in action on Friday at the Orange Coast College Invitational in Costa Mesa.
