Robinson shatters school heptathlon record

The Saddleback women's track team was back in the news this week as a handful of athletes participated in the Orange Empire Conference Heptathlon at Golden West College on Wednesday and Thursday.  Jolie Robinson was the star of the show, breaking the record for most points in a heptathlon in Saddleback history.

Robinson won the first six events over two days and won some of the events by a significant margin.  On Wednesday she won in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meters in opening up a large lead on the rest of the field.  On Thursday she captured the long jump and javelin throw for six wins in seven events.  The lone event that Robinson didn't win was the 800 meters as teammate Shaelynn Barbieri beat her in the final event of the meet.

Robinson finished with 4,379 points, which broke the record of 4,135 from Heather Fenner in 1990.  She was flanked by teammate Barbieri, who finished second in the event with 3,126 points over two days.

Robinson opened on Wednesday by winning the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.61  She then had what would tie the highest leap in the state for the year in the high jump when she cleared 1.60 meters (5'3"), beating the closest competitor by 12.75 inches.  Robinson won the shot put with a throw of 9.31 meters (30'6.5") to win by over five feet and finished the day by running a 26.90 in the 200 meters.

On day two, Robinson opened the day with the longest jump in the state this year in long jump when she covered 18'6" on her third and final jump.  She then tossed the javelin 99'5" on her second throw to win the event by more than eight feet.  Robinson's toss in the javelin would equate to ninth best in the state this season.  Robinson finished the heptathlon with a time of 2:39.91 in the 800 meters.

Robinson's mark of 4,379 points this week has her 518 points in front of El Camino's Yukina Hamachi (3,861), who is her closest competitor in the state so far in 2022.

Saddleback track & field will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Occidental College for the Occidental Distance Carnival.
