I'll take a dozen doughnuts, please

The Saddleback women's soccer team recorded its 12th straight shutout to start the season with a 2-0 victory over Orange Coast College on Wednesday night inside the Saddleback Stadium.  The Bobcats have now outscored opponents 45-0 for the year and tied the program record for shutouts in a season.

Saddleback started the game ranked No. 5 in the nation according to the United Soccer Coaches and No. 3 in California according to the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) rankings.  One of the many reasons is, they don't give up goals.   Saddleback improved on its shutout streak on Wednesday and now stands at 10-0-2 overall and 4-0-2 in Orange Empire Conference play following the win.

The Bobcats scored first when Maliyah Medley (pictured) tallied her team-high 14th goal of the season in the 15th minute for a 1-0 lead.  Saddleback then added an insurance goal when Samantha Villasenor was fouled inside the box in the 81st minute and connected on a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.  It was Villasenor's second goal of the season.

Saddleback's defense made things very difficult for Orange Coast.  The Bobcats surrendered just six total shots the entire night, only three of which landed on goal.  Olivia Wynn easily secured the three saves for her 10th victory of the season.  Saddleback finished with 26 total shots and 15 shots on goal.

The 12 shutouts recorded by the 2021 team ties a program record set by a 2003 team that finished 15-4-2.  With 45 goals for the season, Saddleback is now within 15 goals of tying the program record of 60 scored by the 2003 squad.

The win on Wednesday was also the 99th win for head coach BJ McNicol, who stands at 99-46-37 in his ninth season as the coach.

Saddleback will play again when they travel to Santa Ana College on Friday for a 3:00 PM game with the Dons.  The two squads met in late September, with Saddleback winning 7-0.
