Bobcats capture first regional championship

The Saddleback women's golf team won the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Championship on Monday at Sundale Golf Club in Bakersfield.  It was the first regional title in the history of the program.

Saddleback won a state championship back in 2003, but only finished second in the southern half of the state that year at the regional finals.  This season the Bobcats head to the state tournament this Sunday and Monday as regional champs after winning by 32 shots over the course of two days.

Saddleback's Amber Davalos led the way, shooting 79-73 (152) on the par 73 course.  Davalos shot even par on Monday to finish fourth in medalist play.

Following Davalos into the clubhouse were Sabrina Ladd, Nicole Whipple and Mariana Gandia-Mak.  Ladd shot 80 on Monday for a two-day total of 156.  Whipple shot 82 on Monday to finish at 157.  Gandia-Mak shot 79 on Monday for a two-day total of 160.

Saddleback's 625 total was 32 shots better than Orange Empire Conference foe Orange Coast College, who finished second.  Also advancing to the state tournament was Antelope Valley College and College of the Desert.

The CCCAA State Tournament takes place at Cypress Ridge Golf Club in Arroyo Grande on Sunday and Monday.
