Gauchos surge past Griffins on opening day

The Saddleback women's tennis team opened the 2018 season with a 5-4 win over Grossmont College on Tuesday at the Saddleback Courts.  The Gauchos rallied after falling behind in doubles play.

Saddleback trailed 2-1 heading into singles play before rallying to beat Grossmont.  The Gauchos won in all of the top four singles spots to turn back the Griffins.

Jacklyn Melkonian was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles before Kristina Parks (pictured) swept past her opponent at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.  The matches on court three and court four weren't quite as simple, as both Bailey Donine and Sydney Page had to battle through three sets for wins.  Donine rallied after dropping the opening set for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 while Page closed out her third set with a resounding 6-1 win.  Melkonian and Donine were two-time winners on the day after teaming for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

Saddleback will play again next Tuesday when they host Cerritos College.  Match time next Tuesday with the Falcons is set for 2:00 PM.
