Soccer nears program record with latest win

The Saddleback women's soccer team defeated Santa Ana College, 3-1, on Friday in Santa Ana.  The Gauchos are now one win away from tying the program record of 15 wins back in 2003.

Saddleback came out quick but was kept off the scoreboard until the 33rd minute when Breanna Taboada connected on a direct kick from just outside the box for a 1-0 lead.  The Gauchos out-shot the Lady Dons 11-1 in the opening half but were only able to slip one past keeper Joey Martinez.

Saddleback found its stride in the second half when Monica Venturini found a loose ball on a cross from Taboada in the 49th minute and planted it in the net for a 2-0 lead.  Taboada again assisted on a goal in the 71st minute, feeding Emilee Monnig for her team-leading 14th goal of the season as the Gauchos increased the lead to 3-0.

Saddleback looked ready to complete its 10th shutout of the season, but a late goal by Santa Ana in the 89th minute spoiled the opportunity.  Keeper Angelica Ramos just missed the chance at another shutout when Alex Peinado scored to avoid the shutout.

Saddleback improved to 14-3-2 overall with the win and 10-2-2 in Orange Empire Conference play.  The 14th win was the most since winning 15 back in 2003.  In addition, the win kept the Gauchos in second place in OEC play with two games remaining on the conference schedule.

Saddleback has a chance to close the gap on Tuesday when it travels to first place Santiago Canyon for a 3:00 PM kickoff.  The Gauchos stunned the Hawks 1-0 at home on October 9, giving SCC its only loss of the season.
