Diamond (Bar) not necessarily a girl's best friend

Sophomore Haley Shadid shot an 87 and was Saddleback's "Diamond in the Rough" but the Gaucho golfers couldn't improve past seventh place during a conference golf match on the Diamond Bar course hosted by Fullerton on Wednesday.

The Diamond Bar course, setting up at a par 73, was definitely not a girl's best friend.  More like a diamond in the rough.  And the rough is not a good place to be on a golf course.

The Gauchos have been stymied in seventh place during several conference events this season, except for a sixth place finish earlier this week.  This week's team score of 385 was 55 strokes behind the top team finisher, Mt. San Antonio (330), but only 14 strokes behind Palomar (371) in sixth place.  Saddleback finished comfortably ahead of Cuyamaca (396) and Fullerton (457).

Shadid (pictured) has been the team's scoring leader all season.  Carly Perone and Ericka Vladovich were able to keep their scores in double digits as they each shot a 98 on an afternoon where the average score in the 46-person field was a 96.

Saddleback will be back in action on Wednesday, September 30, at the Costa Mesa Country Club in a conference match hosted by Orange Coast College.
