Demercado and Humphrey recognized

The Saddleback football program had two more players recognized by the Southern California Football Association this week as both running back Emari Demercado and quarterback Cam Humphrey were named player-of-the-week.

Demercado won the award as a special teams/all-purpose player-of-the-week after finishing with 233 yards of total offense and two scores.  He had 161 yards rushing and 72 yards receiving as the Gauchos rolled up 597 yards of total offense in a 35-13 win over Palomar College.  Demercado now has 881 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns on the ground and is second on the team with 40 receptions, totaling 315 yards and one touchdown through the air.  His 881 yards rushing is the second best total for a Gaucho running back over the past nine seasons, trailing only Edward Vander (1,074) from the 2016 team.  Demercado's 14 total touchdowns ranks tied for 11th all-time for a single season.

Humphrey won the award for offensive player-of-the-week after having arguably his best night of the year for Saddleback.  Humphrey finished 27-of-36 for 373 yards and two touchdown passes, connecting with Chris Spiering and Colin Kentros as the offense averaged 8.1 yards-per-play.  Humphrey is now completing 65.7% of his passes for the year with 18 touchdowns against just four interceptions.  He's now thrown 94 straight passes without an interception and has 1,928 yards passing.

Saddleback will finish the regular season on the road at Orange Coast College before awaiting a bowl announcement.  The Gauchos and Pirates are set to kickoff at 1:00 PM in Costa Mesa.
