Two more Gauchos earn POW

The Saddleback football team has been racking up honors from the Southern California Football Association this fall and this week had two more players earn player-of-the-week honors.  Emari Demercado and Chris Evagues are the latest after a 77-24 win over Grossmont College.

Saddleback now has been awarded player-of-the-week on 10 occasions this fall after Demercado and Evagues were recognized this week.  In addition, nine different players have earned the distinction, with only Christian Rabay winning twice.

Demercado had a record-setting night when he rushed for five touchdowns on Saturday.  He finished with 160 yards rushing and 58 yards receiving, averaging 8.4 yards-per-carry.  Demercado now has 720 yards rushing with 11 touchdowns on the ground while catching 35 balls for 243 yards and one score through the air.  His 720 yards ranks 23rd in program history for a single season with two games remaining.  In addition, his 6.9 yards-per-carry ranks second all-time behind Jai Morris (7.6) in 2008.

Evagues was a terror for Grossmont quarterbacks on Saturday, finishing with seven tackles, four tackles-for-loss and three sacks in the 77-24 blowout.  He was part of a Gaucho defense that forced Grossmont quarterbacks into five interceptions, including two more that were called back due to penalties.  Evagues now leads the team with 7.5 sacks and is eighth on the team with 29 total tackles and tied for the team lead with 10.5 tackles-for-loss.

Saddleback plays again this weekend at home when they host Palomar College at the stadium.  Kickoff between the Gauchos and Comets is scheduled for 6:00 PM.  If you can't make it in person, the game will be broadcast live on the Gaucho Sports Network.
