Gauchos too much for Harbor

The Saddleback football team ran its record to 3-0 on Saturday with a 56-27 win at Los Angeles Harbor College.  The Gauchos led 42-6 at the half in cruising to the win.

Saddleback has gotten used to playing on the road in 2017 as the Gauchos have now ripped off three straight wins on opposing turf to start the season.  The latest was a 29-point win where the Gauchos scored in the opening 30 seconds and never looked back.

Cam Humphrey found Chris Spiering for a 43-yard scoring strike just 27 seconds into the game after the Gauchos returned the opening kickoff to the 46-yard line.  Saddleback was not finished, scoring two more times in the opening quarter in opening up a 21-0 lead after 11 minutes of play.  Emari Demercado scored on the following drive when he raced 35 yards through Harbor defenders.  Humphrey again found Spiering on a 78-yard bomb on the next set of downs as Saddleback scored the first three times it had the ball.

Demercado and Spiering would continue to trade scores in the second quarter.  Demercado scored from 8-yards away with 8:33 left in the half for a 28-6 lead, followed by a 30-yard pass from Humphrey to Spiering for a 35-6 lead.  Demercado would again score from four yards away for the final tally of the half as Saddleback blew out the Seahawks before heading to the locker room.

Humphrey would later throw his fourth touchdown of the game in the middle of the third quarter when he found Clinton Allen for a 9-yard score to make the score 42-13.  That would be it for Humphrey, who finished 16-of-23 for 281 yards with four scores.

Demercado finished with 97 yards on 13 attempts as the Gauchos rumbled to 162 yards on the ground.  Spering had the stat-line of the night, making seven grabs for 207 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 29.9 yards-per-catch.  His three scores was one shy of tying the single-game record of four touchdowns in a game set by Eric Lauderdale in 2013.

Saddleback's defense was again one of the top storylines.  The Gauchos forced another three turnovers and have now forced seven turnovers in three games.  Chase Bradley led the Gauchos with seven tackles and one tackle-for-loss while Corey Selenski recovered two fumbles.  Chris Evagues spent a lot of time in the Harbor backfield, totaling three tackles-for-loss, one sack and a quarterback hurry.

Saddleback will finally be at home next week when they host El Camino College at 6:00 PM at the Saddleback Stadium.  The Gauchos are Warriors are both undefeated after El Camino downed Grossmont College, 58-23, on Saturday in Torrance.
