Baseball cooks up baker’s dozen

The Saddleback baseball team had its best offensive game of the season with a 13-2 win against Golden West College on Tuesday at Doug Fritz Field.  The baseball team pounded out 16 hits while dominating from start to finish.

Saddleback scored twice in the opening inning, with the second run being a 385-foot home run to right field from David Le Bioda.  It was the second home run of the season for Le Bioda (pictured), who is now batting .455 with a 1.091 slugging percentage through five games.

Saddleback opened up a 6-0 lead in the bottom half of the third inning when they scored four more times.  Le Bioda drove in the opening run of the inning on a sacrifice fly after Danilo Tiotuico and Johnathan Behm led off the inning with singles and Luc Stuka walked.

Tiotuico was a constant thorn in the side of the Rustler pitching staff.  He reach base in his first five at-bats before finally being in retired in the bottom half of the eighth inning.  Tiotuico finished 4-for-5 with a walk and three runs-scored.

Nation Wood struggled last weekend in the opening series of the year and had a breakout game on Tuesday.  Wood hit his first home run of the year ... a 382-foot blast to left-center field to give Saddleback a 10-2 lead in the seventh inning.  He finished 2-for-4 with three RBI on the afternoon.

As good as Saddleback was at the plate, the pitching staff was just as impressive.  Matt Comnos started and pitched five solid innings in picking up his first win of the season.  Comnos struck out six Golden West batters while giving up just one hit and one earned-run.  He was relieved by Ryan Farmer, who pitched the final four innings of the game.  Farmer was exceptional, surrendering just two hits while throwing 40 strikes in 56 pitches.

Saddleback finished with seven extra base hits in the game after having 10 in the previous four games.

The baseball team is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Orange Empire Conference play.  Saddleback will host Golden West again on Thursday.  The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
